I just want to say one thing about my place of employment....
You know the university you work for is a nerd school when the cheer leaders go to the chess games. What in the world does a chess cheer sound like? I wanna hear them!

Lightening the mood
Lightening the mood a bit...I have Goth Prom in DC coming up next week (!!) and it got me thinking...

What was your Prom Song?  Did your school have a theme?  Is there a song that screams "PROM!" to you?  A sappy slow dancer, a "period" piece, whatever.  Tell me (and distract me from what happened today).

Ours was UB40's "Red Red Wine", but to be fair, it was 1989 and I grew up in the Caribbean....

Suckered in by TV commercials, our young hobbit thrills to dream of a clean shower....
I just did the most amusingly impulsive thing... or maybe it was impulsively amusing?

I saw a TV commercial for the SONIC SCRUBBER, a gadget which is like a spinning electric toothbrush designed to clean tile grout in the bathroom. It has a larger attachment for cleaning the soap scum ring around the edge of the tub.

Dude, I so totally just ordered that!

I'm laughing at myself for falling for the gimmicks of TV commercials, but you know, I've actually had really good luck with the few other "miracle" products I've bought in a similar manner. That vacuum sealer to keep food fresh? It is the single coolest kitchen device ever invented by man. It is so much cooler even than the commercials! Since this commercial for the SONIC SCRUBBER aired just as I finished cleaning every other part of Ian's bathroom but the shower and tub - a chore that I loathe - I have high hopes for this gadget.

Natch, I'll post a thrilling up-to-the-minute report on whether it ever arrives, and how it works.

I don't post as often as I used to...
I remember when I posted, on average, once a day. Now it's an odd occurrence for me to post more than once a week. I'm going to try to remedy that...
But first I must pee, excuse me for a moment.

Mmm... coffee. So, I'm bored at work (what else is new, right?) and something popped into my mind. Before I go, you must understand that I am a geek. Right, so back to my thought... There's a channel that has been showing all of the Star Wars movies in order, one each Sunday. I just realized something wasn't right. I know, I know, pointing out Star Wars continuity errors is like shooting fish in a barrel, but I have to... because I'm a geek.

Now then, at the end of Episode III, Obi Wan leaves a (mostly) limbless and burning Anakin on a shore of lava, taking Anakin's blue-bladed lightsabre.
Near the middle of Episode IV, Obi Wan passes the lightsabre on the Luke, who turns it on... and it has a green blade.

Right, I'm sure you're not reading my journal for odd thoughts like that. Um... wait, why are you reading my journal... who are all of you people... where are we going and why am I in this HAND BASKET!?!

*breathe, breathe*

Ok... so Kat and I have been taking dance lessons from the maid of honor, who luckily used to teach ballroom dancing professionally. She doing it for free and says that I'm catching on quite quickly. :D I still feel a little weird doing it, though. Oh well, we've still got five months to get comfortable with it.

I went to see Iron Man a few days ago. I'm thoroughly impressed. However, I think I ws expecting more... you know, from all the hype. Or maybe, it was just that Iron Man wasn't one of my favorite comic book characters... I don't know.

We finally got the shower in the master bedroom fixed, and I was going to hop in (we've ben using the shower in the guest bathroom), when I noticed the stain on the ceiling. We probably would have noticed it sooner, if we had been using that shower, but we hadn't. I looks like the upstairs neighbor has a leaky pipe. Upon closer inspection, we could also see the ceiling sagging a bit. Great. Just wonderful. We have a plumber coming out tomorrow, as we don't want her bathroom falling through into ours... and this means we still have to use the smaller shower in the meantime. *sigh*
At least we caught it before it collapsed.

Hmm... I swear there was more I was going to write about. Oh yeah, I'm currently engaging in international trading of goods with [info]squishtastic. That's fun! Did you know that they don't have Twinkies (or any Hostess products) in the UK?

I bought a skittles board in an online auction (not eBay, rather shopgoodwill.com) and am anxiously awaiting its arrival. It will be a present for Kat, since she fell in love with the game the first time she saw it (if you know Kat in real life, please don't tell her what it is, as it is a surprise... you can, however, let her know that you know what it is!).
When it arrives, hopefully it will have all of the pieces, but if not, I found a site that sells them separately from the board.

So, in everyone's opinion, how long should we wait after getting married to begin pursuing parenthood?

This weekend at crown I had some challenges as a peer. I was asked for my opinion on someone's garb. Those who know me well know that lying or subterfuge do not come easily so I cannot give false positive feedback. I do give genuine positive feedback where appropriate but given my focusses are in fit and cut I sometimes feel they are like consiliatory rather than genuine. I do mean it, and I am genuine in my praise but I can't help but compare how I would feel being told my choice of colours and fabrics were great but that my fit wasn't. But that's possibly because of my focus, I don't know. I know I was upset about being told my finishing wasn't great but I was upset because I knew it was true;) I did then try and find a way to finish neatly and in an appropriate, if not obsessively detailed*, manner.

Anyway, please be aware that if you do ask for my opinion I will give it, but also know that I am coming from a very specific point. It is that of someone who has spent several years struggling with how to make a garment that moves and hangs and falls like the source materials. I'm less interested in surface embellishments more in the cut. I am very aware of the work that goes into embroidery but it would be more appropriate to get feedback from someone who knows more about it to discuss it.

And it is an opinion based on experience and a focus that is valid but may not be compatable with yours. And I am more than happy to discuss what I am dissatisfied in my own work. No worries there.

* I use a combination of techniques from extant garments rather than one specific technique that can be clearly documented. So my lining is put in mostly by hand in my doublet and about 1/4 in my dresses.

Preparations....
Since I've actually finished everything I was supposed to do today (well, with the exception of laundry, but I'll be doing that for the rest of the night), I decided to start actively packing for Portals in a couple of weeks. I know it's kind of early, but I'd already moved Mattie's stuff out of my LARP bin and Saoirse's stuff was just kind of sitting around in the way. While packing, it occurred to me that I need to make a sheath for the giant greatsword of doom, because I don't actually have one and I do not want to have to carry that thing around all weekend.

Substituting one of my dagger sheaths won't work because I need both daggers, and because they just attach to my belt. I'll need something that sheathes over my shoulder to keep the sword from dragging on the ground. It's, um, as tall as me... maybe taller, since I haven't seen the phys-rep Adrian's making. It's supposed to be a max-length greatsword and that's 62 inches. I'm not quite 61 inches. Maybe I should've asked Adrian to take off an inch or two?

...how am I supposed to fight with this thing?

Well, I guess I'll figure it out somehow, but anyway, sheath. I need to pick up a cheap belt at a thrift store to make into a shoulder strap and a scrap of thick leather for the sheath itself. It shouldn't be too complicated and there's a Tandy Leather in Raleigh, so I suspect I'll be hitting that up reasonably soon. I'm not going to be able to have the armor I wanted for Saoirse by this game, but I'm bringing my old Lore armor rep instead. I'll just switch out the reps when I manage to upgrade. The Lore armor is really ranger-like, which is not exactly appropriate to the character, but I guess I'll deal. I'm also taking apart a pair of Ed's old bracers to whittle down and make a pair for myself. They are way too big on my skinny little arms at the moment.

After the first Portals, it occurred to me that, should I continue being a front line fighter with my character (which is pretty much what I made her for), I should probably invest in some armor. Then maybe I'll fall down less, though Saoirse will miss waking up next to Firmut after battles (it happened so often at the first game, it was practically a running gag... maybe Corey will pick up some armor too).

10. . .
It's Here!!! I can haz silk, oh yes I can haz! It needs to be washed before I can cut it out. Of course we are planning on going out tonight so I won't be able to do any sewing till I get home anyhow. I love the color. It is so very [info]tadhg92 green.  I am having second thoughts on the steeves of my gown. I think I am going to not do draping sleeves. I am thinking since I only have 4 yards I will end up saving fabric if I choose to make them tight cuffed. It will also look more fitting with [info]tadhg92's outfit which will be based off of the Roger II extant tunic (without the spiff bead work).

  • Green Silk Bliaut (tadhg)-Pattern drafted, Silk needs to be washed
  • Blue Silk Bliaut (me)- Still need to draft the pattern.
  • Hose (tadhg)-I think I might change fabric. . .
  • Green Wool Bliaut (st. George Style)- Needs hose
  • Green Wool Bliaut (me)-Not even thinking about it
  • Long Linen Under-tunic (tadhg)-Done
  • Linen under-tunic (me)-Done
  • Black pinstripe Norman-Done
  • Black Pinstripe Bliaut-Done
  • Braes (tadhg)-Done! Woot!
  • Short linen Under tunic (tadhg)-Done! and it looks just like the illustration.

Summer Corset Coming Along....
I've been working on a Summer Corset. It's not done yet, but I thought I'd show you all my progress...

Lots of Pictures )

Picture Meaning:
1. I am using L.M. #100
2. I drew out the pattern on butcher paper, and altered it flat to my measurements.
3. I'm using Aida Cloth... not very "meshy" but I'm using this go round as a "workable test" I've found some other needle point cloth that is considerably more "meshy"... so working out the kinks... :D
4. I'm using 1.25 inch twill tape on ironed open seams to reenforce the seams...
5. I'm using flat steels as boning in the front and back, and spirals on the sides.
6. I used a spoon busk, that was too short... I laced it up with some pretty ribbon to make the busk long enough.

Things I will change... either now or later on next time through...
1. I will either change the 2 bones in the center front between busk gores with spirals instead of flats... or alter the busk gore pattern...
2. change how I run the bones down the front... the way that it is going looks like butt, I mean, unattractive.
3. The back is too high... I need to bring down the top edge, it's hitting my shoulder blade, and it's annoying.
4. Oh and I spilled freaking coke on it. meh.
